12.2.18. Layers

All guide objects and contours are organized into layers. Layers manage the order of operations and keep track of parameters. To open the layer dialog, click the Layers button in the lower-left corner of the SimCam window.
By default, the layers form appears in a separate "floating" window. If you prefer to have the layers fixed within the SimCam window, you can use the Dock/Undock Layers Form function found in the SimCam menu.
Guide objects are automatically placed on the first layer. To add more guide layers, click the green plus button at the bottom of the layers dialog.
In a SimCam project, each layer is represented by a "layer panel" within the layers dialog.
Let's examine the components of the layer panel.
On the left, a thumbnail representation of the objects within the layer is displayed for easy identification. To the right of the thumbnail, there is an info panel providing details such as the layer type and name. On the far right, buttons are available to toggle the layer's visibility and enable or disable it.
Disabling a layer by clicking the Padlock button will dim the layer objects and prevent them from being clickable. Making a layer invisible will cause the objects to be completely hidden and disabled.
Click on a layer to select it. A grey frame will appear around the selected layer, indicating that any new drawings will be added to that layer.
The selected layer can be moved up or down, and duplicated using the buttons located in the bottom toolbar of the layers dialog.
Click the up arrow to move a selected layer higher in the layers hierarchy, and the down arrow to move it lower. This controls the order of operations in the final CNC program, with layers at the bottom being output last.
To duplicate the selected layer, click on the Duplicate button.
Click the bulb button and select Show All to display all layers, or click the bulb button again and choose Hide All to hide them all.
Important! Only visible layers will generate CNC code in the final CNC program.
To update all layer thumbnail images, click the Refresh button. This will also regenerate the CNC program in the editor to reflect any recent changes. Always remember to click this button after modifying parameters or making other adjustments.
To create a new toolpath layer manually, click the Add Toolpath Layer button and choose the layer type from the popup menu.
To hide the layers dialog, click the Hide Layers Dialog button on the right. You can show or hide the layers dialog whenever you need.
Layers feature a gear button on the left side, which opens the parameters for that layer. You can also double-click the information field to access the parameters.
For toolpath layers, the gear button opens the Cutting Operation Parameters dialog. For more details on setting parameters, refer to the section on Setting Parameters for operations.
